The sequel came out two years later and is titled The Bohemian Highway. The series kicked off in 2011 with the publication of the debut novel, City of the Dead. Sara Gran is the creator and writer of the Claire DeWitt series of fiction. At one point she made money by buying and selling rare and used books. She has also composed pamphlets as well as missives and stories along the way. These include Housing Works, The Strand, and Shakespeare & Co. She worked at various bookstores located in Manhattan. Before that was her career, Sara did have a variety of positions– mostly located in fields that have to deal with books. The author has had a lot of jobs before becoming a published author full time. Two years later, she came out with another novel, Come Closer. That was when her debut fictional novel came out. She has since lived in many different locations. She has written for television’s Southland. Sara Gran is a writer of books and for television. ![]()

I wanted to get to it last week but got delayed. ![]() When I started reading more last year, my goal was to pare down my collection □ I have two plastic bags of books from sales now. I may read other books in the series, and definitely plan to read more work from this author in the future. Some cool ideas are introduced in here as well, like addiction to devices (this was written in 91, so a bit forward thinking here). You meet sentient crystals, a machine that can synthesize anything, and a host of other cool things. I’m usually forgiving about all of that, and was in this case as well. ![]() But if an adult reads the book, they may see most of it as cliche. Filled with the usual sci-fi tropes-weird aliens for the sake of weird aliens, emphasis on the relative insignificance of man-but as I have said before of Goodebumps, when you’re writing juvenile or young adult fiction, you have the luxury of introducing kids to these tropes before they realize they are dated. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Each one touches on themes or settings that are reminiscent of its readalike pairing while standing out with a story that is wholly unique. Well, the lighting of course! Electricity isn’t usually an option in these historically inspired 19th-century worlds (with a few fun exceptions). If Sherlock Holmes, Jane Austen, and Harry Potter had a love child together, their love child would be a Gaslamp fantasy romance book. ![]() Whereas, magic, its use and existence, is an aspect of world building that sets Gaslamp novels apart. This technology (or mad science) is often futuristic in nature despite the historical environment. Steampunk separates itself with a focus on steam powered technology. ![]() And both can be high fantasy, set in a secondary world, or low fantasy and set in a world familiar to us. Both feature settings and a system of values from the Victorian or Edwardian Era. Both subgenres share ancestry with historical fantasy and gothic fiction. Gaslamp has a lot in common with steampunk, and as a result, they are often mistaken for one another.
